China Launches Nigerian Communications Satellite
Today, China launched its first foreign satellite, on the same day as the opening of the African Development Bank's annual board meeting in Shanghai, according to the AP.
For those of you keeping score at home, the Associated Press added: "[the] Nigerian Communication Satellite, or NIGCOMSAT-1, was launched by a Long March 3-B rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan province early Monday, Xinhua said."
Late last year, China hosted a big Africa summit in Beijing, and many experts are pointing out the increasing level of Chinese investment in Africa.
Although this satellite is ostensibly about "[expanding] cell phone and Internet services in central Africa," we're betting that this is really about extending the reach of 419 spammers to the rest of the solar system. Seriously -- hasn't everyone on Earth gotten at least 10 of these emails by now?
